Bout Recap: Dolls 273 - Dakota City 118
Crash Test Dolls get first win of the season
April 4, 2011

The Crash Test Dolls took to the track against the Dakota City Demolition Crew with a point to prove. They wanted to prove that they could not only win, but win big. The Dolls started the season 0-1 after a tough loss against the Farm Fresh Roller Girls in March. Since that time, the Dolls have had several skaters come up through the ranks and join the squad. Jammers Stone Cold Kisser and Broadsmack joined Amber Waves of Pain and Pocket Panda in skating their very first bout versus Dakota City.

The first jams for Stone Cold Kisser and Broadsmack both started off slowly. Stone Cold Kisser had a difficult time getting through the pack and was unable to attain lead jammer status, while Broadsmack gathered a major penalty and spent the last half of her first jam as a Crash Test Doll in the penalty box.

"I was so nervous all day before the bout and it seemed like the longest day of my life," said new jammer Broadsmack, "My legs felt like jello the very first jam, but once the initial shock was over I was able to relax and have fun!"

Dakota City's derby inexperience certainly showed throughout the night as they continued to mount penalties, including several on their jammers early on. Dakota City coaches remarked after the bout that they had significantly cut back on the number of penalties they incurred from their first bout.

Throughout the bout, the walls built by the Dolls held well. With the exception of a handful of jams, the Dolls kept control of the pack's pace for the duration of the game. Inside blocking by Nova Starr, Amber Waves of Pain and Whackagewea proved to be big for the Dolls. Along with the other Dolls blockers, they were able to keep Dakota City's skaters off balance and out of rhythm.

The Dolls went into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 138-43 lead. Emphasis in the second half was put on continuing to keep the crowd energized and even plans for some fancy play.

"When it was brought up in the locker room at halftime, I really didn’t take it too seriously; but suggested we wait until the last jam so we didn’t mess it up," said blocker Neuro Sis. "I really didn’t think that I was going to be the one doing it; but thought it would be cool if we could."

Once the second half started, the Dolls also kept up the defensive pressure. It also became the time for the new stars of the Dolls to shine. Stone Cold Kisser took advantage of a power jam to battle for big points while Pocket Panda was inserted into the jammer slot and was able to rack up jams of 19 and 25 points - the biggest jam of the night.

"All I kept thinking about was 'keep going, don't let your teammates down,'" recalled Pocket Panda. "I didn't know about the total points, until after I sat down on the bench and the Coaches pointed the score out to me. I'm just thankful I had the opportunity to show what I can do; the fact that I had a great support system on the track is what allowed me to actually have fun while doing it."

With the win secured, the Dolls decided to use the final jam to give the crowd one last reason to cheer with a passing of the star. Blocker Neuro Sis was sent in to jam while Captain and jammer Smallbury Steak was positioned as the pivot.

"Every time I came up to the pack, Smalls was always right there in the back," said Neuro Sis. "I'd look at her and she would nod me on. Then I saw our chance, Smalls was up against a gal double her size; but she was up towards the front of the pack. She looked back at me and I reached for the panty, handed it to her, then screamed for her to Go! Go! Go! It was surreal and exciting, and the whole thing seemed to go in slow motion; although I am sure it was only a couple of seconds. "

As the crowd roared, time expired and the Dolls skated off with their first victory of the season, 273-118.
